PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

Born in Galatina on 10 February 1955, Marcello followed his classical studies at the Liceo Classico “Pietro Colonna” in his hometown.

In 1980, he graduated with full marks in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Padua.

In 1981, he carried out a Practical Hospital Internship at the Nephrology Unit of the Galatina Hospital with a final grade of “Excellent”.

In May 1982, he was hired as a hospital assistant at the Nephrology Unit of the “Vito Fazzi” Hospital in Lecce.

In 1989, he obtained a specialization in Nephrology with full marks at the University of Modena.

In 1989, he passed the “Eligibility for Primary Nephrology” exam with full marks.

In 1994, he won the “Help” competition at the Nephrology Unit of the Vito Fazzi Hospital in Lecce.

In 1997, he was assigned the “Peritoneal Dialysis” module at the Nephrology Unit of the Vito Fazzi Hospital in Lecce .

In 2008, he was entrusted with the management of the Simple Operative Unit of “Emergency Dialysis and Vascular Access Surgery” of the Nephrology and Dialysis UOC of Vito Fazzi Hospital in Lecce .

In 2010, he won a competition for the Director of the UOC of Nephrology and Dialysis of the Galatina Hospital, starting his managerial activity on August 5, 2010.

In 2016, he was assigned the position of interim Director of the Nephrology and Dialysis Units of V. Fazzi of Lecce and of the Galatina Hospital.

In 2019, he was appointed Director of the UOC of Nephrology and Dialysis of the Vito Fazzi Hospital in Lecce

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY

He is the author of 30 publications indexed on PUBMED.

From 1997 to 1999, he was a member of the Board of the Study Group on Peritoneal Dialysis of the Italian Society of Nephrology.

From 2011 to 2013, he was Coordinator of the Study Group on vascular access of the Italian Society of Nephrology.

From 2015 to 2017, he was President of the Apulo-Lucan Section of the Italian Society of Nephrology.

Author of the book “Eco Color Doppler & Vascular Access for Hemodialysis” published by Wichtig Editor, which has been sold in thousands of copies, both in Italian and English versions.

He designed and created a software (PD Forecast Test) for calculating the efficiency of dialysis in peritoneal dialysis.

He has created a software (GEV @) for the recording of vascular accesses.

Since 2016 he has held lectures on issues related to vascular access and Eco Color Doppler at the Sant’Anna School of Pisa.

SPECIFIC SKILLS IN THE FIELD OF VASCULAR ACCESS SURGERY FOR DIALYSIS

Surgical activity in the vascular access sector began in 1982, under the guidance of Prof. Francesco Mastrangelo.

Operational cases:

About 2000 native and prosthetic fistula interventions, of which more than 800 completed in the last 6 years.

Positioning of Central Venous Catheters for acute and Tunneled n. 1500

AVF angioplasty n. 350

Intraoperative angioplasty n. 250

In 2004, he performed the first ultrasound-guided intraoperative angioplasty during the preparation of an AVF [J Vasc Access. 2006 January-March; 7 (1): 38-42].

In 2009, he introduced the surgical technique of predilatation of the vessels before the packaging of the fistula [J Vasc Access. 2015 May-June; 16 (3): 250-4. doi: 10.5301 / jva.5000327. Epub 2015 Jan 17].

In 2017, he introduced the intraoperative angiography technique during the packaging of AVFs [Giornale Italiano di Nephrology 2019 (36) vol S.74: 157].
